YouTube (for PlayStation Vita)

Say what you will about the PlayStation Vita's video game library, but its app marketplacea slowly expanding software repository is quite potent despite its small size. In it, you can find the likes of Foursquare, LiveTweet , Netflix, and other social networking and entertainment mainstays. YouTube now joins their ranks with a free app that replicates the basic viewing experience, but not the entire YouTube experience as you can't upload video, create playlists, or view your desktop viewing history when you log in. Still, if you simply want to watch the top 10 skateboard wipeouts, this is your app.

Launching the app opens a streamlined, touch-friendly interface with a menu bar at the bottom of the screen that houses the Recommended Search, History, and Favorites icons. It's clean and simple to navigate. The main content area is filled with Recommended videos by default so that you can quickly fire up potential clips of interest.

YouTube for PS Vita gives you the option to login with your desktop YouTube credentials, but that doesn't transfer everything that you'd expect to the video game handheld. I could check out my Favorites (such as the hilarious ("Super Saiyans are REAL") and Recommended ("Dexter Season 7 Trailer"), but my History didn't carry over. That doesn't sound like a huge loss on the surface, but it is for me as I often get lost in the bowels of YouTube and forget to favorite an entertaining or informative video. That said, my PS Vita YouTube history doesn't sync with my desktop's YouTube history, so I guess it's a wash.

The video watching screen, by default, is split in half. The left side contains the actual video, the amount of views, the username of the person who uploaded the clip (and date), and options to like or dislike a video, as well as an icon that lets you watch a video in full-screen mode. The right side contains Suggested Videos, Comments, and Information. You can watch videos in HD mode or widescreen ratio (when available) when a clip is blown up to full screen.
