Microsoft has finally released its game-changing operating system, Windows 8 this year. This is believed to be the biggest change to the Windows OS since the launch of Windows 95. It was launched on 26th October this year. Microsoft has made sure that the new operating system works on all forms – Desktop and Notebooks. It’s also available on tablets, starting with Microsoft’s own Surface tablets to the various Windows 8 smart phones. It is designed in a way that it will make people using different platforms to come together to use a common OS.
Some of the major changes incorporated in this version to make the OS compatible with touch screens as well as mouse and keyboard are as follows:
Windows 8 Lock screen:
In Windows 8, your computer boots straight to the lock screen, the same screen you’ll see on a Windows 8 tablet. You swipe upwards, or click or press a key on your keyboard, to remove it and see the user accounts, as you’d see in previous versions of Windows. The Lock screen shows the time, date and can also show more detailed information from an app of your choosing, such as Weather or Mail. Many other apps, such as Twitter clients can also show information on the Lock screen.
User Interface:
Now, this is one of the most distinct changes that make you think more than once that you are actually working on aWindows Operating System. In 28 years of windows, Microsoft has introduced a new tile based user interface, also referred as the modern UI. The tiles show up the apps and even the Control Panel is handled through this new interface.
No START Button!
Are you the one who looks for the START button as soon as you see the desktop? Sorry but the start button will now RIP. Yes, there is no start button in Windows 8. Although you can always have it back through third party utilities.
Multiple Windows, Modern UI style:
When you tap or click on an app it opens in full-screen mode. Most apps are designed to work this way, but you can drag down from the top, and then drag either left or right to resize the app to occupy a small column at either side. It feels like a revelation on a Windows 8 tablet as it’s the first time you can see two apps at once.
Refresh & Restore:
Hanging computer? Need to format? Not anymore. The new Windows 8 comes with REFRESH option that gives you default settings without losing any data. Also, the RESTORE button wipes the hard disk and re-installs the Operating System without the hassles of a formatting CD.
Combining the interface, performance, security and new features, Windows 8 is impressing. For just Rs.2000, it’s a no-brainer upgrade from Windows XP or Vista, and even for Windows 7 users, it’s a worthwhile purchase.
